Organic farmers are not permitted to use artificial fertilizers for growing animal feed, as a result the management of the land and growing of natural crops for feed is very important
All Country Life Organic Milk farms grow a higher proportion of their own feed to ensure the best quality for both their animals and their land
Crop Rotation
As artificial fertilizers are not permitted, it means alternative farming practices have to be adopted to replace essential nutrients back to the land
Crop rotation is an essential requirement of organic farming allowing the land a chance to refresh itself before the next feed harvest. Plants use nitrogen in the soil to grow and this nitrogen needs replacing - in organic farming this cannot be done by artificial means
To achieve this, organic farmers grow legume crops such as white and red clover. Clover converts atmospheric nitrogen into a form that can be utilized by the next crop whilst helping to improve the soil fertility and soil structure
By using natural methods to look after the soil, we also avoid the use of herbicides/pesticides that could potentially pollute the countryside's watercourses
